Surrey, B.C. – The 77th Cloverdale Rodeo featured a stacked field of world, Canadian, and past Cloverdale champions, competing alongside riders with a bevy of impressive accolades. The unique invitational format attracts the best of the best, and the 2025 event was no exception. The powerhouse field gave the sell-out crowd plenty to cheer about as they witnessed a showdown between a world champion and a world record holder in the Saddle Bronc, a wire-to-wire win in the Barrel Races, a Bareback win by a Texan making his first trip to Canada, and a Bull Riding final where the bulls stole the show.
Kade Berry Takes Top Spot in a Hotly Contested Bareback Final
The riders came with their game faces on in the first event of the finals. With scores of 86 and 87.5 on the first two rides, it was clear from the outset that it was going to be close, and it was going to take something special to win. Riding in the fourth position, Kade Berry, the 21-year-old rider from Weatherford, Texas, rode Anoop for the full eight and earned a score of 89 points. A few other riders nipped at the leader's heels, with 2019 CPRA Champion, Orin Larsen, coming closest with his 87.5-point ride.
"This is my first time to Canada and I'm coming back next year!" remarked Berry as he accepted his award cheque. "[This is] my first time in Cloverdale, got the big cheque…and I'm gonna go take it to the 'big bank.'" When announcer Brett Gardiner asked Berry about the fans at Cloverdale, he shared that this competition was an inspiration to him. "The Stetson Bowl is so cool. This rodeo actually inspired me to ride buckin' horses in 2019 when I was in high school, and to get the 'dub' on my first trip here is pretty special."
World Record Holder, Logan Hay, Takes the Win Over Four-Time World Champion, Zeke Thurston
When five-time reigning Canadian champion Zeke Thurston pumped his fist in the air following his 89.5-point ride, it looked like he was poised to take home the spurs in the Saddle Bronc competition at the 2025 Cloverdale Rodeo. His total held up until the world-record holder, Logan Hay of Wildwood, Alberta, saddled up on Double Red in the last ride of the competition. The crowd knew Logan's performance was something special, and they were right. Moments after the ride, Brett Gardiner's voice boomed over the PA as Hay's score of 90.5 points was announced.
"Oh, I'm pumped. I love this rodeo," said Hay in his post-event interview. "I've been coming here since I was little. To compete in this arena that my dad, and my uncle, and my brothers have, it's a blessing…The energy that this crowd brings, it's just unmatched."
Kyla Simmons Goes Wire to Wire to Win in Cloverdale
With the sun peeking through the overcast sky and "Highway to the Danger Zone" playing on the PA, Kyla Simmons of Kamloops, BC shot into the Stetson Bowl. Her run of 15.50 set the bar as one of the weekend's fastest rides and was going to be tough to beat. A few of the next seven riders came close. 2019 Canadian champion, Brooke Wills, looked like she might turn in a faster time as she rounded the last barrel, but ended up clocking in 0.04 seconds behind Simmons to take second place. Simmons' ride was the fastest of the entire rodeo.
"I was pacing," Simmons said when asked if she was nervous waiting through all seven rides to see if her time would hold up for the win. Then speaking to her preparation and the bond with her horse, "She's been my girl for a lot of years and I've been waiting to run here, so I was ready to blow the doors off…she felt good, I felt good, and we just made it work."
Beau Gardner Wins, Jordan Hansen Takes Second, and the Bulls Shine
The quality of the field is always a headline at the Cloverdale Rodeo, but the stock is equally renowned. In true Cloverdale fashion, the bulls were fresh and feisty for the final in front of a sold out crowd. By the time Beau Gardner got into the chute for the seventh ride of the finals to take on Fallen Angel, yet another CFR bull, only one rider, Jordan Hansen, had managed to hold on for the full eight seconds. Gardner looked solid before sliding off the back of the bull just as the buzzer sounded, but his 86-point ride was enough to take the win.
"Aw man, I'm ecstatic," Gardner exclaimed after receiving his Cloverdale champion's spurs. "I've been dreaming of coming to this rodeo for a long time and to get it done was pretty rad." When asked how it felt to compete in Cloverdale, Gardner summed up the sentiment of the entire field when he put it simply, "You guys are awesome. Thank you so much!"
